Grandparents Day

The credit for the origin of a National Grandparents Day goes to Marian McQuade, a homemaker in Fayette County , West Virginia and a mother of fifteen children. Her prime objective was to champion the cause of desolated elderly in the nursing homes. She also wished to encourage the grandchildren to draw on the acumen and astuteness their grandparents could endow them with. Then in 1978 President Jimmy Carter declared that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. September was noteworthy as it implied to the autumn years of life.

Purpose

To honor grandparents
To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children
To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer

History

Through combined efforts on the part of Governor Arch Moore, Senator Jennings Randolph and McQuade and like minded individuals interested in preserving their legacy, in 1973, a statewide campaign began in West Virginia to give over a particular day completely for grandparents. Same year, Senator Randolph instituted a resolution in the United States Senate and five years after its inception in 1978, Congress passed the legislation asserting publicly the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.

Tradition

Proper adherence to the day is very important. Some families like a closed door with-in-self private get-togethers, but for those who can give a thought to larger groups, it can be pleasantly pleasurable to have a story-telling session, convincing grandparents to recount stories of their past, edifying kith and kin about experience back in the old days, the growing up, the family setups, the rituals, all in all everything that only they know of the past.

A significant approach at such reunions can be an update of family photographs album. Old photos should be marked with Names and dates and signed by all present, to carry the memories to further generations. Attempts must be made to include people who don’t have families. Ways could be many, through cards, community projects and regular visits make them feel earthy good.

It is quite substantial to take a census, like the oldest and youngest grandchild or family with the most grandchildren or presence of five generation families. An opportunity presented to be a Foster Grandparent is also very inspirational for kids.

As Grandparents Day approaches, help Children to identify and date all photos in old family albums, while they have someone to ask. Many happy memories can be derived from this in years ahead.

Moreover, each and Everyone of us is a grandchild and we must take it as mutual responsibility to do all that we can to observe this day—it can be a time to discover one's roots and learn endurance and empathy from the elderly. Special talents, such as cooking, sculpting, quilting, tailoring, knitting should be passed on to the elderly people who display interest. This alleviates the obsolete self-esteem and relieves them of a feeling being old and useless. But most important, this day should be a spirit that lives throughout the year—a spirit we carry inside ourselves.
